There is a lot to consider when designing your first interview. In this document we’ve prepared a short Best Practices Guide to help you make the most of video interviewing.
Designing the best questions for video
Keep your interviews short and focused — ideally 3 to 4 questions that total no longer than 5 minutes. Our highest engagement rates occur around this range.
We recommend including the following types of questions:
- Experience — e.g., “What are your skills?” or “How do you like to work?”
- Motivation — e.g., “What drives you?” or “What gets you out of bed in the morning?”
- Roleplay — e.g., “If this situation occurred, how would you handle it?”
- 1–2 questions that are specific to the role or your company.
Framing your video
Present your video as a video introduction rather than a formal interview to make candidates more comfortable and increase engagement.
Record a short introduction video that welcomes candidates and gives context about the process. Use this as an opportunity to highlight your company’s culture. Videos with a friendly face speaking directly to the camera tend to perform best.
Inviting Candidates
Increase response rates by sending multiple reminders — 3 or even 4 can have a noticeable positive effect. Consider also sending SMS notifications to candidates’ phones for quicker engagement.
Always include the deadline date clearly in your messages and time your follow-ups consistently to keep candidates on track.
